Neighbourhood Challengers
How do we make the 15-minute city concrete in vulnerable post-war housing estates: what are the supporting functions, places and routes?
Social functions are scaled up to (upper) neighbourhood level, retail scales and concentrates - and the number of public transport stops is decreasing. At the same time, residents of vulnerable metropolitan residential areas are increasingly dependent on their immediate living environment; on their neighbourhood. Moreover, the diversity in those neighbourhoods is high. For liveability and social cohesion, strong and safe communal places are essential. However, the choices that affect this are made within different municipal departments and organisations.
With the concept of Neighbourhood Carriers, we try to make the 15-minute city concrete. In doing so, the approach is simple by combining three perspectives:
- In the spatial structure of the neighbourhood, what are the central routes and places?
- In everyday use, what are the most frequently used routes and places?
- What do residents think are the most valuable places, features and routes?
Lay those three layers on top of each other - and it can be seen where investments become best concentrated.
We developed and applied the concept in two studies:
- Neighbourhood carriers I
- Neighbourhood supporters Couperus neighbourhood
